Amazfit GTS review: Looks beautiful, great for fitness enthusiasts

Amazfit might not be as popular as Fitbit but it is one of the top brands in the smart wearable tech space. Amazfit’s parent company Huami Technology is one of the top manufacturers of smart wear in the word.
They also supply Xiaomi’s smart bands. Amazfit has a variety of brillant products ranging from Smartwatches to Smart Treadmills.

Finding a stylish fitness tracker can be a challenge, but the Amazfit GTS obliges with a petite design and comfortable build for everyday wear. Available in six colorful silicone band options and a crisp AMOLED display, this fashionable wearable continuously monitors heart rate, sleep, and offers custom tracking for 12 different popular workouts.

I used this device for a little over two months while sleeping, hiking, and running to see how this stylish tracker delivered.

Amazfit GTS is a pretty new smartwatch in the series launched to compete with Apple Watch. The GTS watch body is made with aviation-grade aluminum alloy for lightweight and great strength.

There is an additional NFC and Bluetooth 5.0 LTE integrated with Amazefiot GTS. The GTS is 50 M water-resistant, safe for swimming. The Amazfit GTS has built-in optical heart rate tracker, barometer, and light sensor like other Amazfit Smartwatch models. The GTS has modular watch faces and flashlight.

GTS has 220mAh battery, good enough to power the watch up to 14 days. The watch can work for 25 hours with continuous GPS.

I was unable to test this device’s 50-meter water resistance for swimming or other aquatic workouts, but I did wear it in the shower without experiencing any issue. The manufacturer does note, however, that this wearable isn’t safe for hot showers or other water sports such as scuba diving, diving, and high-speed water sports, generally.

The Amazfit OS lets you choose watchfaces and even edit two preset watchfaces. Yes, just like an Apple Watch, the OS lets you edit widgets on the two default watchfaces. You can choose between a preset number of information tiles in preset templates. Swipe left or right and you can access the fitness info page that shows the heart rate and the steps along with burnt calories. The graphics on these pages look cool. Swipe down from the top and there’s a shortcut tray with easy access to auto-brightness toggle, mini torch, night mode, battery level and more. Swipe up from the bottom and you access the on-device settings. Weirdly, the notifications from your phone can only be accessed from the Settings menu.

GPS tracking is accurate:

The watch has built-in GPS to plot data for activities that involve outdoor movement. The data can be seen in the form of a map on the Amazfit app with a comprehensive analysis of speed, distance, calories burned, and more. The GPS data was accurate and even mapped a pretty steep descent inside a hillside resort where I stayed for a few days while evaluating the watch. Note that GPS only works when you start an activity that needs it. It takes about two to three minutes to lock on, so you might lose a portion of your workout on the map.

Enough juice for the basics:

I really appreciated the GTS’ battery life. Even with auto-brightness turned off, and continuous heart rate monitoring and notifications turned on, the 220mAh battery easily lasted me the promised 14 days. Note that I worked out three days a week in this time period, so the activity tracking was used thrice a week for one-hour-long freestyle workout sessions. The GPS on the watch only turns on when you start an activity like walking or running. I must have used GPS-related activity modes three or four times a week for a maximum of 30 minutes. The always-on display was turned off during this two-week period and I had set the watch on auto-brightness.
